Power Tools for Purpose: Empowering Women in Home Improvement
In a world that constantly challenges gender stereotypes, women are breaking barriers in every field, including traditionally male-dominated areas like home improvement and construction. One such avenue where women are making a significant impact is through the use of power tools.
This week’s Empowered Women Empower Women Blog explores my journey as a woman who fell in love with power tools, overcame fears, and embraced the world of construction, drawing inspiration from my childhood experiences and the achievements of my mom.
From Childhood Observations to Passionate Pursuits
Growing up, I was fascinated by the transformative process of watching my parents renovate our family home. It sparked a curiosity and appreciation for construction at a young age. Witnessing the dedication and skill that went into creating a space filled with memories was truly inspiring. I will never forget taking a hammer to a wall for the first time at age 7. What a rush! I’ve loved “demo day” ever since those early childhood years.
A Fearless Transition to a Woman Using Power Tools
As a woman, the idea of wielding power tools can be intimidating, often surrounded by societal expectations and stereotypes. Sometimes I felt embarrassed to ask questions at my local hardware stores for fear of looking stupid. After a while, I realized that I knew as much, if not more in some cases, than the guys working there knew! I had been putting in the time to research the use of power tools and materials as much as I possibly could. I decided to embrace my passion fearlessly. The first step was acknowledging that the only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves.

Empowered Tools, Empowered You: A Guide to Women’s Home Improvement
Learning from Unconventional Sources
In a world dominated by formal education, I found solace in unconventional learning. Instructional YouTube videos were not as popular back in the early 2000s as they are now, but it became my go-to resource for understanding the basics of using power tools and building installation techniques. From the correct handling of a drill to mastering the art of sawing to tiling and plumbing, online tutorials supplied a wealth of knowledge at my fingertips.
In 2009, after converting the basement level of our home into the primary suite, I was determined to create a new primary luxurious spa-like bathroom. I was able to complete the entire project, with little help from others, and everything I did to create the spa-like bathroom were skills that I learned while doing the project. It was my first major home renovation project, and I felt so empowered after it was completed!

Library Books as Silent Mentors
The local library became my haven for expanding my understanding of construction and power tools. Diving into books written by experts in the field, I absorbed valuable insights that went beyond the scope of online tutorials. The combination of visual learning through videos and in-depth reading supplied a comprehensive foundation for my newfound passion. I especially love the “picture books” at the library that show step-by-step instructions for a project, and there’s no need to pause any videos, so I can concentrate on any one aspect of a project for as long as I need. Investing in Dreams
Armed with knowledge, I took the bold step of investing in my first real power tool, beyond just a drill and a circular saw. I bought a big table saw at a local garage sale. I had no idea how to use the thing, but the sense of empowerment that comes with owning a tool capable of creating and shaping was indescribable. It was not just a tool; it was a key to unlocking my potential in the world of construction. I remember the day our next-door neighbor came over and asked if he could use my husband’s table saw. I retorted that my husband didn’t have a table saw, but that he was more than welcome to borrow mine. From that point on, neighbors came over regularly to borrow tools from me. I loved the idea of being a woman who used power tools to create things.
The Influence of a Remarkable, Empowered Woman Role Model
Watching my mom design and build her Villa, located just outside DC, became a pivotal moment in my journey. Her achievements, showcased on HGTV, highlighted the incredible capabilities of women in construction. It wasn’t just about using power tools; it was about envisioning, planning, and executing projects with finesse. My mother has created incredible homes that have been featured in a myriad of magazines, editorials, and as mentioned, an episode of HGTV. Her homes are uniquely legendary and epic!
